Controls

Controls available depend on the object you are creating.

Control Description
Name Type a name for the first point or generated object, or click Last name to increment to the next available name.
Linear Object Select one of the following when creating points:
Start Input the start vertex for the circular arc.
Centre Input the centre vertex for the circular arc.
End Input the end vertex for the circular arc.
Distance For points, input the recurring distance along the linear object.
For circular arcs, select one of the following modes to input the segment distance.
  • Arc Distance - Input the arc segment distance.
  • Chord Distance - Input the chord segment distance.
Offset Input an offset from the line or reference line if required.
3D circular arc When creating circular arcs do one of the following:
  • Select the checkbox to compute the circular arc segments in 3 dimensions.
  • Clear the checkbox to compute the circular arc segments in 2 dimensions.
Clockwise Specify the direction of the arc:
  • Select the checkbox to draw the arc in a clockwise direction.
  • Clear the checkbox to draw the arc in an anticlockwise direction.
Create points at key vertices When specifying an existing linear object to create the points, do one of the following:
  • Select the checkbox to create points at the:
    • Start and end of each segment.
    • Start and end of each circular arc.
    • Vertices of a spline.
    • Specified distance along the line.
  • Clear the box to only add points at the specified distance along the line.
Skip vertices with points For points, if you input a '0' Offset do one of the following:
  • Select the checkbox to only create points for vertices in a line if a point does not already exist at that location.
  • Clear the box to always create new points.
Insert points into object When creating points, if an editable line is selected and you input a '0' Offset do one of the following:
  • Select the checkbox to create points and insert vertices from the created points into the selected lines or alignments.
  • Clear the box to create points at the specified interval without editing the selected line or alignment.
Note:
  • You can create points for transition curves or splines but they can not be inserted into the line.
Notes
  • With the create by segment tool you can:
    • Create points at a specified distance along a single line, alignment or reference line. Click OK to create the points.
    • Create points at a specified distance along a selection of lines or alignments - Click OK to create points for all valid objects in the current selection.
    • Create circular arc segments for a line or alignment at a specified chord or arc distance. - The circular arc segments are created automatically when the last vertex is picked if a value is already input into the Chord Distance or Arc Distance control. Otherwise, click OK to create the circular arc segments.
  • Configure the distance type in Unit Options
  • When creating points at a specified distance along a linear object:
    • A line can contain straight, spline, circular arc or transition curve segments.
    • An alignment can contain straight, circular arc or transition curve segments.
    • When operating on a current selection or a keyed in line, the direction of the line is as it is stored.
    • When the create point command is operating on a picked line the end closest to the mouse pointer is considered the start of the line.
    • When operating on alignment the direction of the alignment is as it is stored.
    • The offset is a horizontal perpendicular distance from the line or reference line.
    • A negative offset indicates the points are to the left of the line, alignment or reference line.
  • When creating circular arc segments:
    • Toggle the Clockwise checkbox to view a preview of the arc in the opposite direction.
    • If 3D is cleared:
      • Heights are not used to compute the arc components.
      • Lines will display as a circular arcs in the Plan view.
      • Vertices heights are used to display the curve in 3D view.
    • If 3D is selected:
      • Distances input are interpreted as 3 dimensional distances.
      • Heights are used to compute the arc components.
      • True circular arcs display in the 3D view.
  • The final segment may not be the full length.
  • The heights of the created vertices will be interpolated based on the position along the linear object.
  • When creating an alignment:
    • You can create 2D circular arcs only.
    • This tool is available providing the horizontal design standard in the create options is configured to 'None'.
