Description

Select objects in the model view or drawing view using various techniques.

Requirements

Selectable objects in the model or drawing.

Controls
Control Description
Select Click and release to select a single object.
Click and drag the mouse to the right, then release to select objects contained in the region.
Click and drag the mouse to the left, then release to select objects that are at least partially in the region.
Tentatively select an object using the method you have configured in General Options.
Note:
  • The selected object is displayed in the Selected Objects page of the Attributes tool window.
  • The tentatively selected object is displayed in the Tentative Object page of the Attributes tool window.
Select None Deselect any selected objects.
Select All Select all objects on the visible layers in the current view.
Select one of the following methods :
  • Points - Select all points.
  • Symbols - Select all symbols.
  • Lines - Select all lines.
  • Polygons - Select all polygons.
  • Blocks - Select all blocks.
  • Shapes - Select all shapes.
  • Texts - Select all texts.
  • Images - Select all images.
  • Tables - Select all images.
  • Table References - Select all table references.
  • Terrain Models - Select all terrain models or a chosen terrain model.
  • Alignments - Select all alignments.
  • Classification - Select all points in point clouds that match the chosen classification.
  • Source - Select all objects originating from the selected source.
  • Major Contour Lines - Select all major contour lines.
  • Minor Contour Lines - Select all minor contour lines.
Note:
  • Press Alt, then click Select All to select objects on the active layer.
Select by Rectangle Select objects defined by a rectangular region.
Select by Circle Select objects defined by a circular region.
Select by Freeform Select objects defined by a closed polyline region.
Note:
  • Press Ctrl + E to close the polygon.
Select by Polygon Select objects defined by a selected polygon.
Note:
  • Selection is performed in 2-dimensions only.
Select Criteria Select the bounding criteria of region based selections.
Inside - Select objects that are totally within the region.
Outside - Select objects that are totally outside the region.
Overlaps - Select objects that are at least partially in the region.
Note:
  • Applies to selection by rectangle, circle, free form and polygon.
  • Select Single determines its criteria from the direction the mouse is moved between the press and release.
Invert Selection Invert the selection for all displayed objects.
Linked Select objects in the current view that are linked to the active selection and are on visible layers.
Select the object type:
  • Points - Select all linked points.
  • Lines - Select all linked lines.
  • Polygons - Select all linked polygons.
  • Blocks - Select all linked blocks.
  • Shapes - Select all linked shapes.
  • Text- Select all linked text.
  • Terrain Models - Select all linked terrain models.
  • Terrain Model Faces - Select all linked terrain model faces.
  • Point Clouds - Select all linked point clouds.
Note:
  • Currently selected objects are deselected. Press and hold Shift to add to the current selection.
  • Objects are considered linked if they share vertices.
  • Text objects that display properties of one or more objects (e.g. bearing, distance, area, offset etc.) are considered linked to those object(s).
Trace Line Select adjoining lines using a single line as the seed.
Notes
  • Only displayed objects may be selected or tentatively selected.
  • To select multiple objects, press and hold the Shift key while selecting the objects with the mouse.
  • To reverse the selection hold the Ctrl key while selecting the object.
  • Press the Shift key in conjunction with the command to include the currently selected objects in the new selection.
  • If multiple objects are close together, tentatively pick the object before confirming the selection.
  • Objects in the same location are tentatively selected using the following criteria, in the order:
    • Object type - Point, line, polygon, terrain model, shape.
    • Layer draw order - Objects on layers drawn last are selected first.
    • Unique identifier - Objects created first are selected first.
  • A tentatively selected object is not considered part of the selection.
  • Define the method of tentatively selecting an object in the General Options:
    • Alt + Left Mouse Button
      • Press and hold Alt, then click to tentatively select the object.
      • Continue to click until the required object displays in the Attributes tool window.
      • Release the Alt to add the tentatively selected object to the selection.
      • Click in a blank space in the work area to exit the tentative selection mode.
    • Right Mouse Button
      • Right click to tentatively select the object.
      • Continue to right click until the required object displays in the Attributes tool window.
      • Click to add the object to the selection.
      • Right click in a blank space in the work area, or press Esc to exit the tentative selection mode.
  • You can use tentative select in conjunction with the Shift and Ctrl keys.
  • Various keyboard controls provide further selection ability. Refer to the 'Select' section of the Keyboard Controls topic.
  • The selection options available depends on the active view.
  • Selected objects display in the colour configured in the Colours dialog.
  • Use the Select All command in the Layers tool to select specific objects on the a layer.
  • Terrain models in the Select All list can be selected when the terrain model is on a visible layer.
  • Table references are created when tables display the reference number property in one of its columns.
