| Control | Description |

| Name | Enter a name for the attribute. |
| Description | Enter a description for the attribute. |
| Intended Use | Select the object type that the attribute is intended for. Select Generic if the attribute is not specific to an object type. See Example below. |
| Allow Multiple | Select the checkbox to allow multiple instances of the attribute to be associated with an object. |
| Unique | Select the checkbox to allow only one instance of the attribute definition with the same name and type on the current layer. |
| Type | Displays the attribute definition type. (see table below) |
| System | Displays whether it is a system attribute definition. |

| Boolean | A true or false value. |
| Date/Time | A combined date and time value. |
| Group | A container for other attribute definitions. |
| Image | A raster image. |
| Integer | A whole number value. |
| Real4 | A real number value. |
| Real8 | A high precision real number value. |
| Text | A Unicode text string. |
System attribute definitions cannot be edited or deleted.
Intended use - When attribute definitions are created for a layer, the intended use of the attribute is specified. This example shows how the setting is used.
A layer contains multiple attribute definitions.

When an attribute is added to an object, the list of attributes available for selection is determined by:
- the attributes defined for the layer.
- the intended use of each of these attributes.
- the type of object.
Based on the above list of attributes defined for the layer, the following table shows the list of attributes available for selection when adding attributes to objects.
