Field File Structure

A Field file is a text file which is used to store data which has originated as field observations. Field files may be processed to create objects in the data base. They may also be edited to correct data recording or data entry errors. Please refer to the Field File topic for details on the creation and use of field files.

Below is an extensive list of the record types which may occur in a field file. Each record in a field file consists of a zero filled three digit identifier followed by a one or more fields separated by spaces. For a particular identifier the fields will be interpreted by the system as detailed below.

FIELD FILE RECORD TYPES

General Record types These records are passed to the data base file details upon reduction. They may then be viewed or edited in the Utilities/Edit/Details command.

Format Record types These records are used to store global information which is to be applied to the data in the field file upon reduction.

Instrument Record types These records are used to store information about the instrument used.

Unit Configuration Record types These records are used to store the type of angle and distance units used.

Co-ordinate Record types These records are used to store co-ordinates of fixed points. Note that these points are never automatically strung, regardless of the feature coding.

Observation Record types These records are used to store the actual observations.

Intersection Record types These records are used to store observations to be used for a least squares bearing intersection solution.

Resection Record types These records are used to store observations to be used for a least squares resection solution.

Operation Record types These records are used to perform special operations on previously observed points.
