Best FitBest Fit Editor

(This functionality is available with the Computations module)

The Best Fit Editor is displayed after selecting the Computations/Edit/Best Fit command. It is used to create a line or arc that forms the best fit to a set of specified points. Refer also to the Best Fit Procedure.

The colours used in the Best Fit Editor are set using the Utilities/Configure/Colours/Table command.

Item Used to
Cells Display the data in the currently open control file and to select the active cell enabling its value to be edited.
The currently active cell is highlighted with a border.
The currently active cell is selected by clicking the required cell with the mouse or by using the arrow or Tab keys to move the border to the required cell.
Pt Id Column Display or edit the identifiers of points that are selected.
Offset Display the offsets from the best fit line or arc to the selected points used in the best fit computation.

Tool Bar The following special tools are available in the Control File Editor.

The tools run the following commands (in order from left to right).

Tool Used to
Save File/Commit Save the best fit line or arc to the data base.
Insert Line Edit/Insert Insert a blank line into the editor.
Delete Line Edit/Delete Delete a line from the editor.
Add Block Points Edit/Add Block Points If a Block is active, then any points satisfying the Block conditions are added to the editor.
Exclude Points Edit/Exclude Exclude points in the editor from the Best Fit computation.
Fixed Edit/Fixed Set the status of a point in such a way that the computed Best Fit line or arc must pass through it.
Solve Line Solve/Line Compute a Best Fit line for the selected points in the editor.
Solve Arc Solve/Arc Compute a Best Fit (clockwise) arc for the selected points in the editor.
If selected, you will be given the option to define a radius for the best fit arc. It is not necessary to enter a radius.
Solve Circle Solve/Circle Compute a Best Fit (clockwise) circle for the selected points in the editor.
If selected, you will be given the option to define a radius for the best fit circle. It is not necessary to enter a radius.
Note: When a radius is entered, it is treated according to the currently set distance units in Utilities/Configure/Units. Sea level correction, if applicable, is based on the elevations of the points nearest the ends of the best fit arc and the assumed elevation of the computed centre point (which is always assumed to be the average elevation of the project, as set in Configure/Average Elevation).
