Base Plane VolumesCompute Volume to Base Plane

(This functionality is available with the Volumes module)

Computes the volume between the current model and a nominated datum elevation.

Terrain Model Volumes dialog box

Item Used to
Model name: Display the name of the currently displayed model from which the volumes will be computed.
Models may be created for any particular database using the Terrain Modelling/Modelling/Form Model command.
Any previously created model may be displayed using the Display/Features command.
Block is active: Indicate whether there is a block currently active.
This message will read "Block is NOT active" if a block is not active.
If there is an active block, then the volume computed will be of only that part of the model with triangles that are wholly defined by the block.
That is, if there is an active block, the boundary of the volume calculation is defined by the edges of the displayed triangles. Ensure that triangle display is active in the Terrain Modelling/Display/Model command, and that the block check box is active in the Display/Features command, as this will display only those triangles which will be used in the volume calculation.
Refer to the Block command for information on creating and using blocks.
Datum Elevation: Key in a datum elevation.
The volumes of cut and/or fill will be computed between the model surface and the datum elevation.
The units of the datum elevation will be as set in the Utilities/Configure/Units command.
Screen: Nominate that the volume report be only displayed on the screen.
The screen volume report is displayed in the Above Datum, Below Datum and Totals group boxes.
Printer: Nominate that the volume report be sent to the Windows Print Manager.
A report will also be displayed on the screen.
File: Nominate that the volume report be sent to a text file.
A report will also be displayed on the screen.
File name: Key in the name of a file to be created containing the volume report.
This name may consist of up to eight alpha numeric characters plus an extension.
This field is only active if the File radio button is selected.
Browse: Change the destination folder. The destination folder in which the volume report file will be created is displayed above the Browse button.
Header: Select whether header information is to be included in the volume report.
Header information includes the details of the current data base at the head of the volume report. These details may also be viewed or edited in the Utilities/Edit/Details command.
This field is only active if the Printer or File radio buttons are selected.
Progressive calc.: Select whether the volume report is to contain progressive calculations.
Progressive calculations reports on the areas and cut/fill volumes for every triangle in the model.
This field is only active if the Printer or File radio buttons are selected.
Planimetric Area: Display the planimetric area of the model after selecting the Compute button.
There are three planimetric area fields to display the:
  • planimetric area above the datum elevation.
  • planimetric area below the datum elevation.
  • total planimetric area.
Surface Area: Display the surface area of the model after selecting the Compute button.
There are three surface area fields to display the:
  • surface area above the datum elevation.
  • surface area below the datum elevation.
  • total surface area.
Volume: Display the volume between the surface of the model and the datum elevation after selecting the Compute button.
There are three volume fields to display the:
  • volume above the datum elevation.
  • volume below the datum elevation.
  • total volume.
Compute: Compute the planimetric area of the model, the surface area of the model, and the volume between the model and the datum elevation.
The area and volume values above datum, below datum, and the totals, are displayed in the appropriate fields of this dialog box.
A volume report is also sent to a file or to the Windows Print Manager if the File or Printer radio buttons are selected.
If the report is being sent to a file, and the file name selected already exists, you are given the opportunity to overwrite the file or cancel the compute process.
For a report sent to file or printer, header information and/or progressive calculations may also be included. Refer to the Header and Progressive calc. fields.
The units for the display of the area and volume calculations are determined by the settings in the Utilities/Configure/Units command.
Base: Set the datum elevation field to the elevation of the lowest model point.
Cancel: Close the dialog box
